Advanced Ceramics
The emphasis of Advanced Ceramics is to provide students with the continued opportunity to have a creative, in-depth and hands-on experience in working with clay as an artistic medium. Students will continue to develop the skills learned in Ceramics (beginning level) such as techniques in hand-building and throwing advanced forms on the potter’s wheel. Instruction will focus on the 3-dimensional application of the elements of art and the principles of design. Students will add refined detail to their work and learn surface decoration methods with colored slip, underglazes, glazes, and carving techniques. Students will be required to keep a sketchbook for notes, ideas, techniques and feedback about their work. In addition, students will be encouraged to create and develop personal artistic style within their body of work. Art historical references will be emphasized and students will try new methods of clay construction based upon research, course lectures and demonstrations.
