TORREY PINES HIGH SCHOOL VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT

AP Art History

AP Art History is an ART course designed to provide high school students with the benefits of an introductory college course in art history. Students will explore the art of Europe (Ancient Greek to Renaissance to contemporary), Oceania, Africa, Asian, Islamic and America within a social, historical and cultural context. Students will learn to identify and analyze architecture, sculpture, painting and the various themes that develop in art. The goal of the class is not merely to develop an aesthetic appreciation of art, but to view art in a broader context within the study of history and the evolution of human culture. Students taking this course will often elect to take the AP Art History exam in hopes of earning advanced placement or credit at many colleges and universities.
